2004 GRANT MONEY AWARDED TO TKU EXCEEDS ONE MILLION NT DOLLAR

According to the Office of Research and Development, there are 78 TKU faculty members whose research projects rewarded by outside bodies exceeded one million NT dollars in 2004, a considerable improvement compared with last year and the year before—there had been 60 and 65 faculty members respectively. These 78 faculty members will be congratulated and receive a plaque inscribed with “The Light of Tamkang” from the Founder, Dr. Clement Chang at the annual year-end faculty and staff celebration party on Dec. 28.

Among them, Yu Gwo-Hsing, the Dean of the College of Engineering, has topped the list in the last four years in terms of the amount of grant money he has been awarded. This year he was granted 16,320,000 NT dollars, followed by Chen Po-chang, the Dean of the College of Education, Lee Shih-yuan, the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Hu Shou-ren, and Tao Chi-chung, professors at the Department of Transportation Management, who have been awarded over 5,000,000 NT dollars for the first time. Chen Po-chang was awarded by the Ministry of Education for hosting conferences and Lee Shih-yuan won with his collaborative project with the National Taiwan University on digitalized medical detection data base system, whereas Hu Shou-ren and Tao Chi-chung received theirs from the Ministry of Transportation for AI controlled transportation system. All in all, the faculties that have collected sizeable money are mostly from the colleges of sciences and engineering (25 vs. 37). Apart from the above mentioned, there are three other faculty members who have won over 5,000,000 NT dollars this year: Gau Sue-huai of the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Yeh fung-huei of the Department of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering and Wang Wen-jwu of the Department of Chemistry.

Furthermore, 12 faculty members have won between five million and three million NT dollars, while the majority of these 78 awardees (58 of them) have won between three three million and one million NT dollars. Additionally, there are 5 members who have accumulated over two million five hundred thousand NT dollars in grant money over the past five years but have never been awarded with a plaque will be awarded this time at the party.
