37 TAMKANG PHDS SET A NEW RECORD

According to Office of Academic Affairs, 37 doctoral students received their Ph.D. degrees this year, and this number, 6 more than last year (31), set a record in Tamkang’s history. The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, in particular, tops all departments by giving out 11 PhDs.

Those new Ph.Ds are: Wang Yueh in Chinese Department; Lin Li-hsin, Chu Shu-fang, Chin Chi-hao, Lai Chieh-chi, and Shi Wei-chung in Chemistry; Chan Chi-chuan and Tung Tsung-li in Physics, Kuo Wei-jen and Chen Yu-tang in Mechanical and Electro-mechanical Engineering; Yen Shao-tang and Nie Kuo-yun in Civil Engineering; Chuang Chi-chieh, Hsu Chi-shu, Lin Chi-huao, Lee Shao-lun, Lee Chi-chang, Chou Tzi-chuan, Lin Ching-chang, Kao Wen-hsing, Chang Chia-lin, Chi Tsung-heng, Wang Yi-hsin in Computer Science and Information Engineering; Chen Shao-hong, Lai Hong-jen, Chao Liang-lin, and Chou Pao-chu in Electric Engineering; Hu Di, Wang Yueh-chiu, Chen Pi-chu, Chang Li-ping, and Tsai Chung-pin in English; Kai Yi-hsin, Wu Kun-hui, and Wang Ling-min in American Studies. In particular, Chu Shu-fan used to participate in the Anti-SARS Project, Lin Ching-chang works in the Information Processing Center at Tamkang as a technician, and Wang Yueh has been teaching in History Department as an Associate Professor.

Pursuing a Ph.D. degree is an arduous task; most spent years to reach their goals. The Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, for example, requires every Ph.D. candidate to pass qualification exam, earn more than 3.5 points in the evaluation scale, and at least a publication on SCI or EI international journals. Chi Tsung-heng, a new Ph.D. in this department, has been growing up with Tamkang; he started his undergraduate here and spent seven years for his Ph.D. Chi indicated that he often had to attend lectures in other universities—for example, National Taiwan University—to update knowledge in his filed years ago; yet this situation has changed recently, for the learning environment at Tamkang has improved a lot. Dr. Chi, who had been working with the Department Chair, Dr. Keh Huan-chao, remarked that,“no words can express his appreciation to professors in the Department; to students, professors are not only mentors but also friends.”

Kai I-hsin, a new Ph.D in American Studies, who has been teaching in English Department at Chinese Culture University for twenty years, spent eight years completing her degree. During her doctoral years, Dr. Kai gave birth to her child. Also, she mentioned her experience of being an exchange student to Southern Illinois University a summer during his doctoral study, which gave her most unforgettable memory.
