TKU HAS SHONE IN MARTIAL ARTS CONTESTS

TKU won several prizes in the 2004 College Martial Arts and Tai-chi Push Hand Championship Cup last week. The competitions were hosted by the Chinese Cultural University attended by various teams from all over the island. TKU was represented by members of the university’s martial arts clubs and have won a total of 9 awards.

The best performance was delivered by Jseng Chao-yuan, a fifth year student of the Department of Civil Engineering, who won the top place in Other Weaponry category. Wu Shi-rai, of the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department (CMED) won the second place in the Northern Style Wu Shu (Martial Arts). Apart from his, in Wu Shu category, more awards were won. Jou Yang-cheng of the same department won the third place in Chen Style Tai-chi Chuan, whereas Chen Hsi-jin, a sophomore of the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department took the fifth place in Sparring Competition. In the Push Hand category, TKU team won the bronze in the group competition and also performed well in individual competitions: Deng Yu-jeh of the Department of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering won a silver in the second level; Wu Chung-yang of the CMED and Shih Yu-yen of Department of Electrical Engineering won a bronze in the third and eighth level respectively. In women’s group, Chiang Chia- chieh of the History Department won a bronze in the sixth level.

The captain of the team was pleased that this year all four martial arts clubs could designate their members to be on the team representing TKU. They came from Traditional Wu Shu, Internal Wu Shu and Chen Style Tai-chi Chuan Clubs whose participation contributed to this year’s wonderful results. (~Ying-hsueh Hu)
