60 PERCENT OF FACULTY HAS PRESENCE ON THE TEACHING PLATFORM

As an effort of maximizing the use of teaching platform on the intranet, TKU aims to ensure at least one course on the platform per full-time teacher this year (http//www.tku.edu.tw//list/courselist.htm). In TKU there are currently a total of 784 teachers (including those in the Office of Military Education and Training), among which, 418 teachers have applied for a platform, with 441 courses on line, making the application rate more than 50 percent. In addition, there are 34 part-time teachers who put forward 47 courses on line.

The status until September 15 shows that Hu Yen-nan, a professor from the Chinese Department has the highest number of courses, 8 of them, on line among all teachers, followed by Chen Ho-chin from the Department of Information and Library Science, Ji Shun-jie from the Graduate Institute of Future Studies and Susana N. Vittadini Andres from the Spanish Department with 7 courses on line. On the other hand, Wang Wei-tsy from the Department of Mass Communication, Li Chi-wang from the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Chen Jui-chih, from the Department of Accounting and Yu Chia-ping from the Department of Information Management, have all their courses on line, though fewer in number.

In order to enhance teaching impact with the aid of computer technology, the Information Processing Center joined forces with the Office of Academic Affairs to establish a Commission in the Development of Teaching Platform in 2002 which allows teachers to upload their teaching plans, course contents, homework correction, students’ data, chat groups, and grades verification. Since its establishment, the Commission has hosted several workshops explaining the use of the platform attended by 445 teachers so far. There will be 7 more workshops this semester held in October, November and December respectively. All teachers are welcome.

According to the statistics compiled between May 17 and September 15 on the time of using the platform, the top three teachers are Pei Chau-pu from the Spanish Department, Lii Pei-chi from the Department of Management Science and Decision Making (DMSDM) and Chueh Pai-hwa from the Japanese Department. Each of them spent over 1,200 minutes on line. As for the most visited platforms during the same period were those of Wu Jiin-po from the Department of Information Management, Chen Jui-guey from the Graduate Institute of Futures Studies and Lii Pei-chi from DMSDM, with a time exceeding 15,000 minutes for each. Wu Jiin-po’s platform, in particular, topped them all, recorded at 23,000 minutes, making his the hottest on campus.

Most teachers have created attractive websites ‘enticing’ frequent use of the resources available there for students. For example, Wu Jiin-po holds quizzes or competitions on line so that students are ‘hooked’ to win, creating a positive interaction between the teacher and the students. Chueh Pai-hwa, on the other hand, has prepared a sizable material regarding Japanese language learning, on-line translation, guides to studying in Japan, Japanese culture and society and related links for his students to learn outside class hours.

Some teachers have personalized their platform to reduce its serious, academic nature. Hu Yen-nan from the Chinese Department put family photos on the web alongside with teaching materials. Huang Ku-chen, who is the first teacher to use the platform at the Office of Physical Education, has moved his classroom teaching about swimming, golf and other sports onto the web. He attached many interesting instructions and video clips for a truly interactive lesson. Those who are curious about PE on the web can visit his platform. Remember, seeing is believing.
