Rap About Keelung-Tamsui–Taipei City: Prof. Sinn-Cheng Lin Revives Local Memory and Cultural Resonance Through Music

Professor Sin-Cheng Lin of the Department of Information and Library Science carried out the “Digital Tamsui, International Connections” project sponsored by the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education SPROUT Project by hosting a special lecture titled “Hobe Stories: Rap Base Keelung-Tamsui–Taipei City” in collaboration with Tamsui Community University. The lecture guided participants into the stories of Tamsui, extending connections to Keelung, Taipei, and even across Taiwan. The event was attended and supported by Prof. Hui-Huang Hsu, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Deputy Chairman of the Tamsui Cultural Foundation, Liang-Chien Hung; Director of Tamsui Community University, Dr. Tsao-Min Tsai; and Chairperson of Fab Green Village, Mei-Ting Lin, along with Tamkang faculty, students, alumni, and local residents.

In their remarks, VP Hsu emphasized that universities are placing increasing importance on local engagement, encouraging faculty and students to continue paying attention to community issues and serving society with their expertise. Mr. Hung shared perspectives as a Tamsui local, reflecting on recent changes and hopes for the town’s future development. Dr. Tsai highlighted that the event not only promoted local culture but also demonstrated the social responsibility of universities and enterprises, envisioning Tamsui’s journey toward recognition as a World Cultural Heritage site. Ms. Lin explained that Fab Green Village will continue to integrate history, culture, and music-related industries to foster local culture and economic growth.

The lecture adopted a creative rap performance style. Prof. Lin presented 9 original song lyrics—〈我們的淡水港〉(Our Tamsui Harbor), 〈紅毛城〉(Fort San Domingo), 〈勇渡台灣海〉(Braving the Taiwan Strait), 〈來滬尾飲茶〉(Tea at Hobe),〈馬偕之歌〉(Song of Mackay), 〈英勇者〉(The Brave Ones), 〈基淡追追追〉(Chasing Stories from Keelung to Tamsui), 〈台北古城牆〉(Taipei’s Ancient City Walls), and 〈畫說淡水〉(Painting Tamsui). Each carried local stories, set to the melodies of traditional tunes. Through an approach of “edutainment” (learning through music and fun), he transformed local knowledge from abstract academic terms into vivid, rhythmic, and emotional narratives. The performance evoked resonance with the land and culture, deepening participants’ sense of local identity.
