Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, the 8th International Conference on Smart Campus and Exhibition (iCSC&E), hosted by Tamkang University and the Excellent Long-Established University Consortium of Taiwan (ELECT), was held on November 21 at 10:00 AM in the Hsu Shou-Chlien International Conference Center on the Tamsui campus. Over 370 experts, scholars, and students from within and outside the university participated. Themed “Smart Empowerment, Sustainable Innovation, Advancing Toward Smart Sustainable Campuses” (「智慧賦能,永續創新,邁向智慧永續校園」), the event featured 2 keynote speeches and 12 special forums. By leveraging smart technologies, it aimed to drive educational innovation and campus sustainability, envisioning a blueprint for future smart campuses. The conference also included an unveiling ceremony for the Computerized Examination site of the National Examination Center, marking a new milestone in Tamkang University’s smart campus applications.
In his opening speech, President Keh emphasized, “AI combined with digital transformation in education is not just a trend but a responsibility. Over the years, Tamkang University has been on the right track, adhering to the philosophy of ‘AI+SDGs=∞, ESG+AI=∞.’ This integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and technological applications to foster a more innovative and sustainable learning environment for faculty and students through the promotion of smart campus development.”
Chung-Ping Cheng, Political Deputy Minister of Examination, expressed his gratitude to Tamkang University for participating in the certification of the National Examination Centers, making it a demonstration field. By providing more convenient services to test-takers, Tamkang University contributes to national social responsibility. Cheng also praised the university’s forward-looking initiatives in cultivating talents attuned to future trends, its commitment to smart transformation in education, and its continuous refinement over the years. Vic Wu, General Manager of the Specialist Team Unit at Microsoft Taiwan, highlighted, “Tamkang University is the first in Taiwan to migrate all its systems to the cloud. We’ve had excellent collaborations in the past and will continue to work together for the sustainable development of the smart campus in the future.”
The unveiling ceremony for the National Examination Computerized Testing Center was co-hosted by President Keh, Chung-Ping Cheng, former President and Honorary Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering Ron-Yaw Chao, Vic Wu, President of the Tamkang University Worldwide Alumni Association Chin-Tsai Chen, Tamkang University Golden Eagle Club President Lawrence Lin, and Far EasTone Telecommunications CIO and Deputy General Manager Peter Hu. The facility, located on the second floor of the College of Business and Management building, comprises 7 computer classrooms with 524 computers, which the Ministry of Examination may requisition for use as computerized examination site in the future.
The conference included 2 keynote speeches. The first, chaired by Vice President for Academic Affairs Hui-Huang Hsu, featured Dr. Kai Hua, CTO at Microsoft Taiwan, who discussed “Generative AI and Agent Workflow Development,” focusing on generative AI workflows. The second, chaired by Vice President for Administrative Affairs Chun-Hung Lin, invited Peter Hu to analyze “Empowering Technology: Shaping a New Vision for Smart and Sustainable Campuses.” Using Tamkang University and other partner schools as examples, Hu shared insights on customizing smart campus transformations, including campus cloudification (achieving AI campuses), industrialization (trends in campus development), and green sustainability (the responsibilities campuses bear).
The conference provided a platform for academic and practical exchanges, offering educators and the tech industry new perspectives. Afternoon sessions featured 3 thematic forums on topics such as “Empowering Educational Innovation through AI,” “AI-Driven Smart Campuses and New Cybersecurity Perspectives,” and “AI Integration into Institutional Research.” These forums included presentations, discussions, and showcases, sharing practical applications and implementation experiences. Participants explored new trends in the integration of education and technology, promoting innovation and sustainable campus development through smart technologies.
Additionally, 13 partner universities from ELECT exhibited their digitalization achievements and various smart campus solutions in the second-floor lobby. Highlights included Taipei Medical University’s smart campus administrative system, Tunghai University’s AI assistant chatbot Dongdongniu (咚咚妞), Chung Yuan Christian University’s certifications for holistic well-being and autonomous learning programs, as well as fully intelligent service systems, educational applications, and cybersecurity technologies provided by Microsoft and FET. These exhibits demonstrated the practical applications of smart technology in educational settings.
ELECT Executive Director Wen-Hui Tsui, who participated in the conference, remarked that since taking on the role in 2017, she has attended the event for 8 consecutive years. She noted the impressive progress Tamkang University has made annually, especially under the leadership of former President and current Chairperson Flora Chia-I Chang and President Keh, who have selflessly shared their digitalization achievements through this annual event. Tamkang University’s proactive implementation of these innovations, ahead of MOE’s requirements, has been highly commendable.
