Founded 53 years ago, Tamkang University has over 170,000 alumni. The graduates of the first two years have left Tamkang for over half a century. This year Mr. Chang Po-shin and twenty-four other old alumni were invited by the Office of Alumni Services and Resources Development to come back to the University for a day of celebrations marking the 53rd founding anniversary.
The first graduates of Tamkang Junior English College, numbering 200, left the College in 1953. Together with the following two classes, there were 403 graduates. The Office of Alumni Services found twenty-five of these graduates, who bear a testimony to half a century’s achievements of the University in higher education. The twenty-five alumni participated in the daylong celebratory activities, particularly the welcoming tea party held by the English department, where they originally studied.
Prof. Chen Min-nan, director of the Office of Alumni Services, pointed out that the historical significance of these alumni is that they were the first graduates from a private university in Taiwan.
To celebrate the occasion, the alumni prepared special gifts for the University: the school badges, rings, pins, postcards and special publications from various periods of the school’s history. These precious souvenirs will be displayed in the Tamkang History room of the Chueh-sheng Memorial Library.
The twenty-five alumni are Lin Jeng-dong, Hsiao Jia-yuan, Jan Ho, Ho Shen-yang, Ran Da-yuan, Chang Yang-sheng, Chang Ji-jao, Yu Mei-bi, Lai Mo-ju, Ho Ya-jen, Hsu Shi-kuang, Sho Ping-jin, Huang Lian-fu, Yang Tsan-huey, Lin Shi-hong, Li Zeng-feng, Kuo Jun-ying, Tsai Wan-ze, Lai Lin-jeng, Chen Min-tsung, Chen Jao-wen, Chang Po-shin, Lu Chung-jen, Hsu Jeng-rong, and Pan Wen-hong.
