Professor Shi Cheng-hsiung (National Taiwan Normal University) and other seven members of evaluation committee visited TKU last Monday (October 11) and Tuesday, part of the evaluations of Chemistry-oriented Departments national wide (conducted by Chinese Society of Chemistry under Ministry of Education’s commission.) The committee members indicated that TKU owns excellent software and hardware; and they suggested that other universities visit Tamkang and wished that professors in Department of Chemistry advance to higher level of academic research.
The visiting committee was coordinated by Shi Cheng-hsiung, and members include Chou Da-hsin and Chiu Yi-hsiung (researchers from Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica), Lee Kuang-hua (Dean of College of Sciences, National Central University), Pon Hsui-ming (Taiwan University), Wang Shien-chi (Associate Chair of Institute of Chemical Engineering, Industrial Technology Research Institute), and Chen Ching-tan (the President of Taiwan NJC Corporation and ex-President of National Taipei Teachers College). They reviewed and evaluated the data submitted by TKU; they also visited laboratories and talked to teachers and students.
As Shi Cheng-hsiung pointed out, “TKU has produced many excellent students who continue their graduate studies in national universities, and I feel very grateful for this.” He also suggested that students planning to teach at high school should study analytic chemistry. He enquired about whether teachers teaching graduate students earned extra hourly pay or not. Chair of Department of Chemistry Lee Shi-yuan said “No.” Shi indicated, “At National Taiwan Normal University, yes. This is not fair. Under such a condition, who will be willing to teach at graduate school?”
Lee Kuang-hua explicitly indicated, “When I was an undergraduate, TKU’s Doctoral programs ranked the third place in Taiwan, which is already an excellent achievement. If provided with more support of human resources and finance from the school, they will progress to another peak in a few years. The current results can bring out positive circulation.”
Lee Shi-yuan explained that Department of Chemistry has enjoyed the grants of “key departments” from the school for many years. Last year TKU established Center of Nano-Technology; Department of Chemistry was divided into two groups: Material Chemistry and Biological Chemistry. This year Nuclear Magnet Radiator is procured for the use of research, and teachers and students at Department of Chemistry will work very hard.
