Tamkang University Will Soon Have Her Own First Labor Law

Beginning this year, Tamkang University has lumped all full-time so-called “blue-collared” workers into the protection blanket of the new Labor Law, which will soon become effective to benefit every working person under this plan.

In a broader sense, the “blue-collared” workers also include police/security guards and school bus-drivers, in addition to the regular crew such as janitors, custodians, cleaning ladies, technicians, gardeners, etc.

The Labor Law affecting these people had come a long way.

According to Prof. Lo Yun-chih, Director, Personnel Office, “First, we have to carefully draft a blue-print of the Law by consulting the master-sheets provided by the Ministry of Education and Taipei hsien government. Then we secured a second opinion by repeated consultations with concerned units such as Offices of General Affairs, Student Affairs, Accounting, Attorneys, etc. before we felt truly comfortable with what we were doing.

We then submitted the draft to the Taipei hsien government for them to inspect and peruse. A letter of confirmation came on August 2l, and on September 6, in their memo they declared that T.K.U. is the first private higher-education institution that will promulgate this Labor Law.”

So far, our university has employed l32 people working under this category. The breakdowns are as follows: 9l blue-collared workers, 11 technicians, l8 campus police/security guards and l2 school-bus drivers.

The Labor Law is expected to pass by the T.K.U. general administrative meeting. Although it is a matter of give and take, because the crew may suffer some minor loss in working hours and vacation time, they will be compensated adequately by their final pension check they receive.
