NOTED CALLIGRAPHER IS WIRED TO YOUR PC: ON-LINE CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY COURSE TO OPEN AT TKU

To impel young people to pick up the pleasure of learning calligraphy, an on-line Chinese calligraphy course is being given by the famous calligrapher, Mr. Ben-huang Chang, vice-director of the Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center, TKU. “Through the Internet, students will have the most efficient way to learn calligraphy, because they can not only interact with teachers, but also have access to information and an image archive on the net,” he said.

Mr. Chang invited some well-known young entertainers such as Ai-lin Chu, Pei-lien Hu, Chia-i Liao, Lin Tang, and Kuo-hsien Ma as the pioneers of this web-course on Wednesday, (August 6, 2003). Under the instruction of Mr.Chang, they respectively wrote down the Chinese characters “美夢成真”, which means “dreams come true” in English. “It’s so marvelous and yet so easy to learn calligraphy in this way!” they surprisingly agreed.

The program is sponsored by the College of Continuing Education (CCE). Dr. Yao-lung Han, dean of CCE, indicated that using the Internet to teach calligraphy is a brand new way to lead the young people into the art of penmanship. Mr. Ben-huang Chang added, “When you are in a bad mood, you can turn on the computer and practice calligraphy, and then peace will come to you through your brushwork.”

The course is divided into twelve units, with one unit per week. Those who are interested in the course can start their lesson on the fifteenth day of every month and complete a semester when they continue the lesson for three months. Through the net, students can witness not only Mr. Chang’s demonstration but also his correction of students’ homework. In addition, those who are not familiar with accessing the Internet can choose the correspondence course as an alternative option. During the period of their lessons, student performance can be evaluated and awarded with a certificate. After completing one semester, they can join in certain advanced individual instruction according to their level and preference. The advanced instruction fees range from $1,800 N.T. to $2,600 N.T., depending on the student’s level. The special price for the distance course on the Internet is $1,300 N.T. per semester.
