Invited by Dr. Flora C.I. Chang, President of TKU, Dr. J. Myron Atkin, former Dean of College of Education, Stanford University, visited TKU last week with his wife. Apart from delivering a speech, Prof. Atkin also went to Lanyang Campus with President Chang as well as Dr. Clement C.P. Chang, Founder of TKU, and expressed his great appreciation of the features as well as the founding ideals of Lanyang Campus.
Dr. Atkin is an emeritus professor of College of Education, Stanford University. He is a famous scholar on education in America, and has been served in various administrative posts, including Dean of College of Education at both University of Illinois and Stanford University, chairperson of Education Section, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and academician of National Academy of Sciences. The speech titled “The Trend and Issues of Science Education” was presented on Mar. 7 at Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall, Tamsui Campus, which won great feedback.
Dr. Atkin has cherished a very close relationship with our school. When Dr. Clement C.P. Chang studied in the University of Illinois, Dr. Atkin was the Dean of its College of Education. Coincidentally, he also happened to be the Dean of College of Education, Stanford University, while Dr. Flora C.I. Chang studied for her Master program at that school. Moreover, he was also one of the committee members in Dr. Flora C.I. Chang’s oral defense for Ph D degree. Dr. Atkin indicates that, “Tamkang University is a school run with international vision. I believe that by Dr. Flora C.I. Chang’s distinctive foresight, she can convey the international view to students and lead TKU to be one of the first-rate universities in Taiwan.” ( ~Shu-chun Yen )
