A Lecture from a Quality Management Master

On Thurs, 17th May, an internationally-renowned expert in the field of quality management delivered a lecture at Tamkang’s Tamsui Campus. The guest speaker, Noriaki Kano, is a Japanese professor – now retired – who has published numerous academic papers (over 300) relating to quality management; many seminal QM books and textbooks; and received countless international awards, including the Quality Control Literature Prize (six times), the Deming Lecturer Award (1997), and the E. Jack Lancaster Medal (2002).

The “Green Living” Competition

Have you done your bit to reduce carbon emissions today? Starting from Earth Day (April 22) this year, TKU has been taking part in a national university-based competition known as “A Greener Life Starts with Me”. According to related statistics, as of May 17, Tamkang University has managed to decrease its carbon emission levels by a total of 2959 kg. However, the overall rate of participation among TKU students, faculty, and staff amounts to a mere 1%. These statistics place Tamkang third overall when compared with participating universities around Taiwan.

A Knowledge of Europe “Pays Off”

The winner of the 2012 EU trivia quiz was announced on 7th May. First place went to Master’s student Dai Yi-Hsuan, from the TKU Graduate Institute of European Studies, who received a cash prize of NT $20,000. Second place went to the team ‘Blue Sheep Latte’, made up of Chao Yu-rou and Yang Chi-wei; while third place was claimed by the “EU Prodigies”, comprising Department of German freshmen Chou Bo-wen, Chang Chia-en, and Hsu Bo-Cheng.

Australia and East Asia

This semester, the TKU Graduate Institute of Asian Studies has teamed up with sister university, the University of Queensland (UQ), to provide an intensive introductory course called “Australia and East Asia”.

A Cross-Cultural Art Display

Starting from May 15 and extending until June 28, the Tamkang Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center is holding an exhibition that showcases the best of Taiwanese and Korean art. The exhibition consists of paintings produced by artists from Taiwan’s Alliance of Modern Artists (21 artists) and 21 artists from universities throughout Korea.

A Conference on Second Language Writing

On May 18, the TKU Department of English held the Third Tamkang International Conference on Second Language Writing. Held at the Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall, the event commenced with an opening speech by the TKU President, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, in which she welcomed the international guests to the TKU Tamsui Campus. This was followed by a keynote speech from Mark Davies, a professor of corpus linguistics in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Brigham Young University, USA. In his speech, Prof. Davies described the applications of the Corpus of Contempory American English (COCA); demonstrated how to use COCA to assist in the task of academic writing; and introduced another very handy writing aid, the “Word and Phrase” website (www.wordandphrase.info).

All about Instruction

A forum that explores issues of education and instruction is set to be held at the Chueh Sheng International Conference Hall this Friday and Saturday (May 25 – 26). The forum is called the “Global Education and the 26th Curriculum and Instruction Forum: Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Development”. It is jointly held by the TKU Institute of Curriculum and Instruction and the Center for Teacher Education, as well as the Ministry of Education and the National Science Council. The forum opening ceremony will be hosted by the President of Tamkang University, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, and will feature a speech by special guest Hsiu-Shuang Huang, the President of the Association for Curriculum and Instruction, ROC.

A Lecture by Leo Lee

On 14th May, Leo Ou-fan Lee – a renowned professor, writer, and cultural commentator – came to the TKU Tamsui Campus to deliver a lecture. His lecture took the theme ‘Lyrical Modernism in European and Chinese Fiction”.
