The 12th WFC to be Held in Taipei

The World Filtration Congress (WFC) is an international conference on filtration held once every four years. The 11th WFC was recently held in Austria, and was attended by three Taiwanese professors: Hwang Kuo-jen and Cheng Tung-wen (TKU Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering); as well Kuo-Lun Tung (Department of Chemistry, Chung Yuan Christian University). Together, the trio succeeded in gaining the rights to the next World Filtration Conference, to be held in 2016.

Wind Engineering Week

Last week, the TKU Wind Engineering Research Center held “Wind Engineering Week”. At the opening ceremony of WE Week, the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Ho Chi-dong noted that the Tamkang University Wind Engineering Research Center has always been one of Tamkang’s model research centers, as it not only implements numerous research plans, but also successfully produces talented professionals.

A Plethora of Patents for Tamkang Professors

Three Tamkang University professors recently obtained six patents for products invented while conducting research. The three include Department of Electrical Engineering professor and Dean of Research and Development, Dr. Shung-wen Kang; Department of Chemistry professor, Dr. Chen kan-nan; and Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering professor, Dr. Gau Sue-huai. The patents were granted by institutes in Japan, America, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China; while the technologies invented were all created with the environment in mind.

My Language Journey

On May 10, the TKU College of Languages and Literature held a special lecture at the Ching Sheng International Conference Hall, Tamsui Campus. The special guest was Mr. Sun Ta-chuan, the Chairman of the Council of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan. Mr. Sun’s talk was based on the theme “Language Resides in the Soul – My Language Journey”, explaining the cultural conflict that inherently exists in language. The Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Dr. Wu Hsi-Deh, said that through the lecture, he hoped that students could become aware of the importance of language in shaping people’s attitudes toward a particular culture.

Korean Art on Display at Tamkang

Starting from today (May 15) and extending until June 28, the Tamkang Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center will be holding an exhibition that showcases the best of Taiwanese and Korean art. The exhibition consists of paintings produced by artists from Taiwan’s Alliance of Modern Artists (21 artists) and 21 artists from universities throughout Korea.

A Conference on Management Science

On 19th May, the Department of Management Sciences is set to hold the 2012 International Conference in Management Sciences and Decision Making. Taking the theme “the Development of Management Knowledge in the 21st Century”, the conference will be attended by local scholars, as well as guests from India, America, China, Australia, and Indonesia. The conference will discuss issues to do with management science, international business, strategic management, and marketing management, and will feature a keynote speech by Dr. Jinn-Tsair Teng of William Paterson University of New Jersey.

The 2012 Spring Cultural Trip

On May 5, the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs held the annual Spring Cultural Trip: an organized outing that allows Tamkang’s foreign and Mainland students to discover Taiwan’s cultural diversity in more depth. This year’s Spring Cultural Trip has been divided into two sessions; one on May 5 and the other on May 19. On May 5, 60 students set off for Yilan, in Northeast Taiwan, where they took part in a number of fun activities. The TKU Vice President for International and Cross-Strait Affairs, Dr. Wan-Chin Tai, who took part from start to finish, commented: “for this year’s trip, we’ve placed more of an emphasis on the cultural aspect. There are also many local Taiwanese students taking part this year. We hope this allows for local and overseas students to mix and become better acquainted.”
