The 2025 Global Views University Social Responsibility (USR) Awards winners were announced on April 1. Following our first win last year, Tamkang University again stood out, earning two awards. On April 8, Executive Vice President Chun-Hung Lin, Chief Audit Executive Yen-Ling Lin, Associate Professor Hsiao-Wen Hung (Head of the Resilient Governance Section, Center for Sustainability Development and Social Innovation, SDSI), Professor Min-Fen Tu (Chief Editor of the Sustainability Report and faculty member of the Department of Business Administration), and alumnus Cheng-Min Hsu attended the award ceremony. Prof. Chun-Hung Lin received the Model Award in the “Sustainability Report Category” from Deputy Minister of Education Ping-Cheng Yeh, while Prof. Tu received the Excellence Award in the “Sustainable Curriculum Category” from Global Views–Commonwealth Publishing Group founder Charles Kao.

On April 1, University World News (UWN) published an interview with Dr. Sohail Inayatullah, a visiting researcher at Tamkang University's Department of Educational and Futures Design. In the interview, Inayatullah lamented that universities today are falling behind in futures studies and praised Tamkang University’s visionary approach of requiring all undergraduate students to take futures studies courses.

Installing smart meters helps schools monitor electricity usage and identify opportunities for energy savings.

Tamkang University has been actively assisting in the "2024 Project for Subsidizing Universities and Colleges to Improve Energy Efficiency Measures," achieving excellent results and earning recognition from the Ministry of Education (MOE). In 2025, MOE once again commissioned Tamkang University to serve as the project office for the advisory team, continuing to assist universities and colleges nationwide in improving existing energy-saving measures and energy systems. The focus is on installing smart meters, implementing Energy Management Systems (EMS), replacing aging heat pump systems, and integrating electricity monitoring data into EMS, supplemented by EMS training courses or related energy-saving initiatives, to strengthen and implement campus energy conservation efforts. The application closed on February 21, with 86 schools submitting applications—a more than 26% growth compared to 68 schools in 2024.

The Department of Aerospace Engineering at Tamkang University has recently relaunched research related to deep space exploration, with lunar exploration set as the initial target. A three-year feasibility study has been initiated, showcasing the department’s strong capabilities and ambition in the space sector. Professor and Department Chair Fu-Yuen Hsiao stated that Tamkang is the only private university in Taiwan engaged in this area of research, and the results will serve as valuable references for the country’s future space programs.

The College of Liberal Arts hosted an International Master Lecture, where the Department of History invited Dr. Paul R. Katz, Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, for a special talk. The lecture, titled "Plagues, Sin, and Rituals of Suffering: Perspectives on the Wangye Belief in Modern Taiwan," was held at 10 a.m. on April 10 at Ching-Sheng International Conference Hall. Katz explained that Eastern and Western societies have adopted different interpretive approaches and solutions when facing large-scale epidemics, and introduced Taiwan’s various plague deity beliefs. He emphasized, "Good deeds bring good rewards, evil deeds bring retribution—faith serves as a spiritual comfort that can have a positive impact on people's hearts."

Tamkang University's Department of Architecture graduates are advancing straight into Ivy League schools! In 2025, 4 alumni, including Chi-Tung Wu, were admitted to the Master of Science degree in Advanced Architectural Design of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, Columbia University's (Columbia GSAPP, M.S.AAD). The news, shared on the Department of Architecture’s Facebook page, greatly excites faculty and students. Among them, Chi-Tung Wu was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship from Columbia University, worth an impressive USD 45,000, highlighting his outstanding performance and potential.

Associate Professor Li-Mei Liu from the Department of Spanish has published her new scholarly monograph The Grammar of Mandarin Chinese (《中國官話語法》, Arte de lengua chinica, que vulgarmente se llama mandarina) in March this year, through Tamkang University Press. This work results from her National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) overseas research project conducted between 2022 and 2023. By uncovering this previously unstudied text, Liu aims to explore 18th-century Spanish missionaries' research on Mandarin Chinese grammar and contribute to contemporary scholarship’s reexamination of early Western linguistic thought and its intersection with Chinese grammar. The monograph also provides valuable material for studies on linguistic views and cross-cultural grammatical traditions during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

4 Student Clubs Shine in Annual Evaluation; Robotics and Wind Ensemble Clubs Win Top Honors Again
4 student clubs from Tamkang University participated in the “2025 National College and University Student Club Evaluation and Showcase.” After the award ceremony, everyone gathered for a joyful group photo.

From March 29 to 30, Tamkang University’s Robotics Research Club, Wind Ensemble Club, Seed Tutoring Club, and Photography Club traveled to National Central University to participate in the “2025 National College and University Student Club Evaluation and Showcase,” organized by the Ministry of Education. Among 214 clubs from 118 colleges and universities, the four Tamkang clubs stood out. The Robotics Research Club and Wind Ensemble Club each earned the Top Honor in the academic and recreational categories, respectively, for the second consecutive year. The Seed Tutoring Club was recognized with a Grade A distinction in the service category. At the same time, the Photography Club advanced to the finals with its photojournalism project focusing on homelessness and received the Best Featured Club Activity of the Year award.

International high school graduates visited Tamkang University's Tamsui Campus for a spring tour, where the Department of English highlighted the strengths of its faculty.

On April 11, the Chinese Language Center arranged a spring tour to Tamkang University’s Tamsui Campus for nearly 300 international high school graduates and non-native Chinese speakers studying Mandarin. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the group visited the campus and attended breakout sessions hosted by the Colleges of Liberal Arts, Engineering, Business and Management, Foreign Languages and Literatures, and International Studies. These students, who are currently engaged in intensive Mandarin study, came from Europe, the Americas, Africa, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Through this visit, those interested in applying to universities in Taiwan hoped to gain a firsthand understanding of Tamkang’s campus environment and academic resources.

To promote interaction and friendship among Indonesian students in Taiwan, the Indonesian Student Association of Tamkang University, in collaboration with the Indonesian student associations of National Chengchi University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, jointly organized the “Indonesian Student Olympics” on March 29–30 at the Tamsui Campus. The event attracted over 300 enthusiastic Indonesian students from 15 universities and colleges. In his opening remarks, Dean of International Affairs Prof. Chien-Mu Yeh warmly welcomed students from other universities to Tamkang and encouraged all participants to seize this opportunity to build friendships through competition and enjoy the spirit of sportsmanship.
