Extending Ties in Latin America

On May 26, the President of Tamkang University, Dr. Flora Chia-I Chang, led a group of senior Tamkang staff to visit several sister universities in Central and Latin America.

Department-based Self-evaluation Commences

Last month from May 15 – 31, numerous academic departments at the TKU Tamsui Campus took part in a “department self-assessment and on-site evaluation”. The evaluation was undertaken by 19 academic departments from four of TKU’s colleges, including the colleges of Liberal Arts, Science, Foreign Languages and Literature, and the Graduate Institute of International studies. The TKU Chief Audit Executive, Dr. Pai-ti Ching, explained that both this year and next year (2013), TKU will hold evaluations of academic departments. The following year, it will conduct a teaching assessment that will cover all academic colleges and departments. The purpose of doing so is to thoroughly prepare for the department-based evaluation held by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan in 2015.

Tamkang Attends ECS Meeting

Three graduate students along with TKU assistant professor Yeh Bing-hong recently attended the annual Electrochemical Society (ECS) Meeting held from May 6 – 11 in Seattle, America. The graduate students included Fu Hui-jun and Lai Jun-yan, from the TKU Department of Physics, as well as Song Jun-han, a TKU alumnus who is taking a graduate program at Taiwan’s National Chung Hsing University. Together, the trio presented three academic papers related to the field of sensors. Their studies explored the results of nanowires in sensing ultraviolet rays and gases. They also conducted a materials analysis on such results.

A Lecture on Venture Capital

On June 6, a lecture will be held as part of the TKU Department of Industrial Economics’ series of “Master Lectures”. The special lecture will be delivered by Ping Wang, an academician at the ROC’s Academia Sinica, on the topic ‘Venture Capital’.

Spanish Language, Culture, and Translation

On 8th June, the TKU Department of Spanish is set to hold the 11th Conference on Spanish Language Instruction, Culture, and Translation. To be held at the Ching Sheng International Conference Hall, the event will be hosted by Prof. Wu Kuan, the Chair of the Department of Spanish, and will feature a speech by the Dean of the TKU College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Dr. Wu Hsi-Deh.

New Machinery to Promote Physics Research

The TKU Department of Physics recently received a considerable research grant under an initiative for private universities offered by the ROC National Science Council. To make the most effective use of the funds, the Department acquired two very specialized and advanced machines. The machines are used to measure phenomena known as cathode luminescence (CL) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and will be kept in a soon-to-be-established center known as the “TKU Center for Heavy Machinery”; the first of its kind among private universities in Taiwan.

The International Youth Ambassador Exchange Program

This year, a total of four groups of Tamkang students were chosen to represent Taiwan overseas as international youth ambassadors. Two groups were selected from the Department of Spanish. One of these groups will leave for Spain on June 24 and will be led by the Chair of the Department of Spanish, Dr. Wu Kuan. The other will depart for Argentina at the end of August, to be led by assistant professor Liu Kun Yuan.

An African Fashion Show in Taipei

On May 26 and 27, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) together with the Taipei City Government held an African Fashion Show and Culture Exhibition at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store, Xinyi Branch. Among the models to showcase traditional African attire during the fashion show were Cynthia Tiny and Lauricy Leal from Tamkang. The two students both come from Sao Tome and Principe, Africa.

It’s Tamscar Time

Introducing Tamscar: a mix between Tamkang University (“Tam”) and the glitzy extravagance of the Oscars (“scar”). The product is a night of fun and entertainment, as Tamkang farewells its graduating international students in larger-than-life Oscar fashion.
