From December 5-11, Tianjin University hosted the 2010 Cross-Strait Student Leadership Forum. A TKU delegation of ten students and one professor attended the event, and returned to Taiwan with fresh insights and a myriad of new memories.

A New Role for TKU Professor, Dr. William T. Lin

New Global Trends and Cross-Strait Relations

On Dec. 20, the 15th “New Global Trends and Cross-Strait Relations” Academic Symposium is set to convene at TKU’s Ching Sheng International Conference Hall. The attending parties will include the TKU College of International Studies and the Shanghai Institute of International Studies (SIIS), who will discuss a broad range of issues on the topic “A Chance for Closer Affiliation and Mutual Benefit”. The symposium will consist of 14 thesis presentations and will be emceed by TKU Graduate Institute of China Studies professor, Dr. Su-Chi, as well as former TKU President, Dr. Chen Ya-hong.

TKU Glory in Chinese Speaking Competition

Damien Some, a TKU international student from Burkina Faso, recently entered a Chinese speaking competition. The contest was hosted by the National Sun Yat Sen memorial Hall and drew 96 foreign entrants from 27 countries. Damien, who’s been in Taiwan for 3 years now, came first.

A Tribute to the Practical Nature of Futures Studies

From the 14th to the 17th of December, the TKU Graduate Institute of Futures Studies held a professional intern exhibition at the Tamsui Campus’ Black Swan Exhibition Hall. The display showcased publications and items related to the students’ internship programs. For example, second year graduate student Lai Yan-zhi displayed copies of “The Big Issue”, the well-known publication and magazine company at which Yan-zhi has been interning. By setting up a stall at the exhibition, he hoped to inform people that “The Big Issue” provides a voice for society’s vulnerable and disadvantaged. Another Futures Studies student, interning at the Taipei City Government’s Department of Social Welfare, brought and displayed precautionary equipment used as protection in the event of disasters. The stall was set up to emphasize the importance of taking precautions against disasters, and featured an interactive area, where visitors could more closely inspect and learn about equipment such as fire extinguishers and emergency lights.

The National Swimming Meet – 2 Gold, 1 Silver, 6 Bronze

This year, in the 12th National Song Zhu Mei Swimming Competition, Tamkang University again claimed a vast hoard of medals. Competing against 22 universities from across Taiwan, the Tamkang swimming team earned 2 gold, 1 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
