Worries of Security of Founder of T.K.U. Turned out To Be False Alarm

Dr. Clement C.P. Chang, Founder of T.K.U., concurrently the President of World League for Freedom and Democracy, led a delegation to attend the annual meeting of Non-Governmental Organization held in the United Nations, New York, from September 10 to l2. The dates coincided with the savage attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Mrs. Carrie W.T. Chang, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, was filled with anxiety when the news broke out. She kept calling the hotel in N.Y. where our Founder was putting up for his temporary visit. And they (including their daughter Dr. Flora C.I. Chang, V.P. for Administrative Affairs) could not rest well until they had heard their loved one’s voice from the long-distance phone.

Pres. Chang Horng-jinh Visits Europe Again:

A European academic tour led by Pres. Chang Horng-jinh and Dr. Feng Chao-kang, V.P. for Academic Affairs was concluded successfully, ending in a signing potential with the time-honored University of Paris-Sorbonne as well as the University of Jean Moulin, Lyon 3 for a possible joint Ph.D. Studies, with which a student from Tamkang, under the guidance of advisors from the above two universities, could take courses and complete his dissertation writing in due course. Given time, this program can become a reality.

Tamkang University and I.B.M. Will Soon Inaugurate A Joint Linux Information System

A cooperation “cutting-edge” project will soon be underway between I.B.M. and Tamkang University. The project is aimed at constructing a Linux system to upgrade the Internet service efficiency. In the meantime, the project also carries two long-term goals: to heighten the free-flow of data processing; to cultivate more “State-of-the-art” experts in the future.

Dean Lin and Chair Lin Both Touted in Conference of Foreign

A Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages was held from 7 thru 8 September in Sian, China. It was hosted by The College of Foreign Languages in Sian. Dr.Lin Yao-fu, Dean of T.K.U.’s School of Foreign Languages, attended this conference. Also present was Dr. Lin Chun-chung, Chair of the English department.

Students Who Wish to Re-take Freshmen English

As of last school year, a new program to divide Freshmen English classes in terms of students’ capability in English has been implemented in the English department.. This innovative measure was aimed at upgrading the effect of English teaching. Caution, however, was exercised to limit the practice to the English department only. Because the effect is tremendous, the School of Foreign Languages is planning to expand this program by applying it to departments of Japanese, German, Spanish and Russian, where Freshmen English classes are taught. For students who wish to re-take their First-Year English this year, they are required to register first in the English department for a screening test.
